Perhaps you have been perfecting your paint strokes or your golf game for years. Maybe you are still looking for that perfect way to enjoy your time. Either way, hobbies can provide countless opportunities to meet new friends, explore your talents and keep active.
Find an activity you really love. Pursuing your interests makes you feel alive and challenges your mind and body. People who participate in a variety of hobbies are more likely to be happy and healthy. So volunteer, take up tennis, travel to new places or go to a museum exhibit. Many friendships blossom when two people find they have the same interests, so invite your friends and family to join in the fun.

Finding the Right Hobby for You
Maybe you want to learn how to play the violin or how to cook Spanish tapas. Whatever you're passionate about, ask yourself the following before committing to a new activity:
- Is this a group activity?
- Will I have an opportunity to meet others?
- Can I afford it?
- Am I physically able to participate?
- Do I have enough time for this activity?

Is Exercise a Hobby?
A hobby is anything you love to do. So all the better if your hobby also keeps you fit and gives you energy. Looking for fun new ways to stay active?
- Liven up your chores by playing fun music while you work around the house.
- Get outdoors! Even if you are just gardening or reading a book in your backyard the fresh outdoor air can instantly improve your mood.
- Take a walk around your neighborhood.
- If you're able, go for a jog or bike ride. High intensity workouts challenge your mind and body.
- Dancing is fun and a great way to meet new people. Look for dance lessons nearby and don't be afraid to try something new, like the tango or salsa!
- Swimming is fun and easy on your joints, and gives you a good workout.
- Jazzercise and Tai Chi classes are great, especially if you do not always have the motivation to workout alone. Teachers help you safely learn routines while fellow classmates provide support.
- Tennis, bowling and golf are popular sports for men and women of all ages. Invite your friends and family for hours of fun.

Animal Companions
Animals are loving, playful and compassionate creatures. Many pet owners think of their dog or cat as their best friend. Dogs make great walking partners and make you feel safe at home. Cats can be playful, but also like to relax on the couch with you. If you have grandkids, they will have a great time playing with you and your new pet.
Think about the reality and responsibility of owning a pet and make sure you're ready for the commitment. Can you afford veterinary bills, food and toys? Are you ready to give your new friend everything it needs? Once you are certain, contact your local humane society or shelter. They can help you find a pet that matches your personality and lifestyle.
