  Faith & Spirituality

For some, being spiritual means going to a faith-based service. For others, spirituality and organized religion may not go hand in hand. Whether you find God at a church, synagogue or mosque, or your higher self on a yoga mat, nurturing your spirit makes you happier and healthier.

Your Faith

Religion is the organized practice of spirituality and involves specific beliefs and rituals. When you join a house of worship, you are welcomed into a community of people who share your values. But you do not have to belong to a particular religion in order to cultivate a spiritual practice or find a spiritual community.

Your faith can teach you how to appreciate small moments, care for others, find beauty and navigate life's twists and turns. Below are some ideas for growing your spiritual practice:

  • Make time for reflection. Consider joining a prayer class or meditation group.
  • Read and contemplate scripture in your spare time. You may also find it interesting and thought-provoking to expose yourself to other religions.
  • Find a friend you can talk to about your thoughts.
  • Join in worship services as much as possible. Ask a religious or community leader about transportation to and from your house of worship.
  • Focus on the positive as much as possible.
  • Try keeping a journal of your daily reflections and thoughts.
  • Donate your time to others through mentoring or volunteer work.

Faith and Aging

No matter how old you are, it is human to ponder the meaning of life and your existence. Growing older can change your perspective and many people find themselves evaluating their life in a sort of "life review." Your faith and spiritual beliefs can help you find understanding and acceptance.

  • If you find yourself reflecting too often on the past, ask yourself what you want to accomplish in the future and what legacy you hope to leave.
  • You may have concerns about dying, which is normal. Talk with friends, family and spiritual leaders to help you come to terms with what lies ahead.
  • Trust the natural unfolding of life and death. Your faith can help you face the unknown and understand your fears.
  • Embracing relationships and seeking unique experiences can give your life new meaning and allow you to live in the moment.

Faith and Loss

Losing loved ones is always difficult and painful, but everyone experiences grief in their own way. Some people feel sad and lonely, while others get angry and try to place blame. Some folks are so shocked they find themselves in denial. Some people become so consumed by their grief that they forget to take care of themselves and their health deteriorates. In times of grief, draw your loved ones close and turn to your faith for strength. If you feel like you need extra support, professional help is available. Most importantly, be kind to yourself and remember to be patient. Grieving takes time.
