Who We Are
Get Ready for Life is a new campaign to help older adults live with independence, health and well-being by planning ahead for life's transitions. Our goal is to provide older adults with objective information and resources so they can make wise decisions about their future.
Get Ready for Life is an initiative of Care for Elders-a partnership of more than 80 nonprofit and other organizations dedicated to increasing access to services, improving the quality of care and enhancing the quality of life for older adults and family caregivers in Harris County. Sheltering Arms Senior Services, a local nonprofit, is the lead agency and fiscal agent for Care for Elders. To learn more about Care for Elders, visit us online at http://www.careforelders.org/.
How We're Making a Difference
Life takes planning. Get Ready for Life offers older adults one place where they can get the information, resources and support they need to make their own decisions and take charge of their future. The campaign identifies four major planning areas-health, housing, finances and happiness.
What We Believe
Get Ready for Life believes that all older adults can live with:
- Passion: By staying healthy and doing more of what they love
- Freedom: By planning for their finances and living on their terms
- Independence: By considering their options and choosing the place they call home
- Purpose: By building relationships, pursuing their interests and giving back
Why It Matters
By 2030, one in five Americans will be 65 or older. By 2040, the number of Harris County residents over 85 will triple. Every sector of our community will feel the impact of an aging population. Most older adults in Harris County have not fully prepared for what might lie ahead-either because they are not aware of the issues, do not have the information they need to make smart choices or because they do not understand that planning ahead is vital for maintaining their health, freedom, independence and happiness.
To meet this moment, Get Ready for Life is working together with older adults and their families to ensure they understand the importance of planning ahead for life's transitions, have the information they need to make wise decisions and prepare for their future-making this time in life one of health, independence and well-being.
