Fitness Tips
Physical activity is a good idea for almost anyone at any age. Though if you are currently inactive or have a history of chronic illness, you should consult your doctor before beginning a routine. If he or she approves, there are a few things you should know before getting started:
- Always wear loose, comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes with good support and cushioning.
- Always take a few minutes to stretch, warm up and cool down.
- Drink water every 15 minutes, especially in warm weather.
- Begin slowly with an exercise you are comfortable with, keeping in mind that you don't need high intensity to get most health benefits.
- Each day you should aim for 30 minutes of aerobic activity like swimming, biking or walking. Record how far you go each time. You will be inspired by your progress.
- If you feel comfortable doing resistance training, work it into your schedule twice a week.
- Stretching and balance exercises increase stability and are an important part of a well-rounded exercise routine. Build flexibility, strength and even friendships in a yoga class.
- Only exercise if you are feeling well. If you are sick, wait until you have recovered.
- If you experience chest pain, trouble breathing, dizziness, difficulty with balance, nausea or prolonged joint and muscle pain, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Remember to have fun! Do activities you enjoy. Find an exercise partner to help you stay motivated. Join a group class at your local gym or community center. The more you exercise, the easier it gets. Sticking with your routine will also give you a sense of accomplishment and confidence.
